Buy Study Guide Beowulf is the first surviving epic written in the English language. The single existing copy of the manuscript dates from the late tenth century, although some scholars believe it dates from the first part of the eleventh century. It is found in a large volume that features stories involving mythical creatures and people. Two different scribes copied the poem, most likely using an existing copy. Between and the Reformation, the whole volume remained in a monastic library until Sir Robert Cotton gained possession of it for his own extensive library.
A fire consumed much of his library, and the volume containing Beowulf became badly charred. Today the manuscript still exists, though it is falling apart rapidly due to the charring in the fire. We do not have any definite knowledge about the poet–indeed, we do not even know the date of the poem’s composition.
Through the study of Old English verse, most scholars believe that the poem was composed much earlier than the Cotton manuscript, between and
Arrow Staff writer, desiringGod. Too many of us struggle in dating — to discern our hearts, to communicate with one another, to balance priorities and responsibilities, to reject sexual temptation — without ever asking God for his wisdom, strength, and help. We read articles, text friends, listen to podcasts, even ask for advice, but put off kneeling at the feet of our Father in heaven.

Example of the early disciples In the book of Acts, the early disciples modeled a pattern for spreading the gospel message: This approach demonstrated a simultaneous and equal emphasis for making disciples through both public preaching and Christian relationships.

What should I look for in a Christian boyfriend? Rather, in terms of romantic relationships, it focuses on principles for marriage. Dating today is used as a way to evaluate whether the man and woman would be good marriage partners. Thus it follows that a Christian boyfriend should be, first and foremost, a man you think would make a good Christian husband. A Christian woman should be looking for someone who is serious about God and serious about his relationship with her. Gary Schneeberger, vice president of media and public relations for Focus on the Family , states that “[t]erms like ‘religious right’ have been traditionally used in a pejorative way to suggest extremism. The phrase ‘socially conservative evangelicals’ is not very exciting, but that’s certainly the way to do it. Although evangelicals constitute the core constituency of the Christian right, not all evangelicals fit the description and moreover, a number of Roman Catholics are also members of the Christian right’s core base.
Mennonites and the Amish , for example, are theologically conservative, however there are no overtly political organizations associated with these denominations. History[ edit ] Jerry Falwell , whose founding of the Moral Majority was a key step in the formation of the “New Christian Right” Patricia Miller states that the “alliance between evangelical leaders and the Catholic bishops has been a cornerstone of the Christian Right for nearly twenty years”.
In response to the rise of the Christian right, the Republican Party platform assumed a number of its positions, including dropping support for the Equal Rights Amendment and adding support for a restoration of school prayer. The past two decades have been an important time in the political debates and in the same time frame religious citizens became more politically active in a time period labeled the New Christian Right. Williams argues in God’s Own Party that it had actually been involved in politics for most of the twentieth century.
He also notes that the Christian right had previously been in alliance with the Republican Party in the s through s on matters such as opposition to communism and defending “a Protestant-based moral order. In addition, as the Democratic Party became identified with a pro-choice position on abortion and with nontraditional societal values, social conservatives joined the Republican Party in increasing numbers.
President Jimmy Carter received the support of the Christian right largely because of his much-acclaimed religious conversion. However, Carter’s spiritual transformation did not compensate for his liberal policies in the minds of Christian conservatives, as reflected in Jerry Falwell’s criticism that “Americans have literally stood by and watched as godless, spineless leaders have brought our nation floundering to the brink of death.

This is a Study Guide to the book Alcoholics Anonymous. It is dedicated to those who want recovery from alcoholism, but have difficulty with the word “God”. Especially, as that word gets used by individuals who embrace traditional religious concepts of what it means to them. Be advised that other ideas and interpretations, which are consistent with the basic AA text, also have value and usefulness in the recovery process. Should you choose to follow this Study Guide, you will be presented ideas which this author has found to be consistent with the basic text of AA.
